Leah Hughes, Freshman Seminar Teacher

“The Journey curriculum has changed my approach to teaching freshmen and older students in core classes as well. This curriculum provides both structure and versatility and helps me meet my students where they are, focusing on the social skills and soft skills that will serve them best as they develop into productive young adults. Each year I feel comfortable changing the order in which we cover each exploration, allowing me to create a unique class to meet my students’ ever-changing needs.”

About

Kathleen King is a master educator and curriculum author who teaches both students and teachers the value of investing in the social-emotional skills of high school freshmen. She studied Special Education at both the University of Alabama and the University at West Alabama receiving her master’s degree in 2008. In 2005, she began her teaching career at Hillcrest High School in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and taught in the classroom until 2013. During her career at Hillcrest, she was asked to start a general education elective course called “Freshman Seminar.” The purpose of the course was to make the transition to high school easier for freshmen students. The material provided wasn’t working for her and wasn’t engaging her students. This challenge inspired her to pursue her own curriculum.  While building rapport with her students through creative teaching, she surveyed students each year gaining a better understanding of what they needed in order to be successful. These surveys provided her focus for research, and a way to further develop her curriculum to benefit both students, and other teachers. The feedback from students also provided the heart and foundation of the program, which King describes as “Person-First, Student-Second.”

In Spring of 2013, after her husband’s career move to Tennessee, she decided to stay home and raise her three young children. As a stay-at-home mom, she continued to research and write, revitalizing the curriculum into what it is today. Kathleen, her husband, Jonathan, and their three children moved back to Tuscaloosa in the Spring of 2017.  She now continues to pursue opportunities to equip teachers with The Journey curriculum, in order that they might connect with students in the same way she has.
